Efficiency Umbrellas are a great way to conserve space inside your settlement while still allowing room for the pods of Manufacture Tokens to spawn. The umbrella consists of a central pillar with a 3x3 platform on top. The manufacture token is placed in the center of this platform while the pods spawn on top of it. Additional tokens can be placed underneath the umbrella saving up to 8 tiles of space per Manufacture token, or a total of 32 spaces if used on all 4 types of Manufacture Tokens.
Constructing an Efficiency Umbrella
Start by raising a 3x3 platform with the Smooth Edit tool.
Use the smooth edit tool on the sides of the platform to hollow it out, leaving the central pillar.
You can then use the Smooth edit tool on the underside of the platform to thin it out, although it can be a bit tricky.
Place your Manufacture token in the center of the platform.
Place other tokens underneath the umbrella.
Construction tips and Cautions
Plan ahead
Once tokens have been placed you will not be able to build an umbrella above them.
You can however construct an umbrella under a Manufacture token that has already been placed.
Since Manufacture tokens tend to come later in the game, it may be a good idea to contruct your umbrellas early so you can place other tokens under them.
Do not place tokens requiring a power source under an umbrella, you may have trouble linking it.
Once a token is placed under a umbrella the tokens height will not be adjustable.
Digging a shallow trench under the umbrella will allow you to place it low enough that it can be jumped onto from ground level while still allowing room for tokens underneath.
Settlement Organization
Umbrellas make a great landmark for locating and organizing tokens. You can organize each umbrella so it holds a certain type of tool.
