The Forcefield is a nebulous black barrier that extends from a pylon-like structure when it is supplied with power. The forcefield will repel all projectile weapons fire, making it important to defend wide open spaces in settlements in the late game. The size of the forcefield depends on the supplied power.

All power sources inside the barrier will deactivate. This can cause serious problems if the settlement was not constructed wisely; In extreme cases it can lead to an oscillating state where the forcefield expands, shuts down its own power sources, contracts, then reactivates and expands again. To avoid this:

  1. Use external power sources exclusively to feed the forcefield.
  2. Plan the settlement so that endogenous power sources are close to the outside of the settlement, where they will not be disrupted by the Barrier.

Developer updates have made it possible to delete some objects and thus reorganise the base. This makes it much easier to build a base with a working barrier system.

Conventional doctrine suggests that the best way to power a forcefield is by directing multiple external sources into a Power Deposit, and then directing this into the Forcefield. As long as power is flowing into the system, the Deposit will remain at full charge, ensuring a period of safety after power is cut off.

Upgrades

The forcefield is upgradeable, with a wide range of effects.

Before Avail

Before the Avail expansion was launched, the forcefield had a very distinctive pink colour.
